THANK YOU, MR LODDER ! Feb 10, 2011
By sol pincus This volume is a worthy complement to MARK VAIL'S 'HAMMOND ORGAN: BEAUTY OF THE B' & a worthy addition to any library belonging to a serious Tone-wheel practitioner. It's more of a musician's work book than Vail's own offering (which in itself, contains a sizeable compendum of Organ licks, & tips from the stars) & includes a very helpful cd to accompany the musical examples provided in the latter half of the book. Like Mark Vail, Mr Lodder is a formidable source of Hammond knowledge; his text, as well as the notated examples, covers the gamut of 20th (as well as 21st) Century tonewheel music. What seperates the authors of B3-generated music from Scholar experts of other instruments is the exuberant ENTHUSIASM & PASSION they bring in their literary offerings. To my knowledge, for that matter, I do not ever recall meeting a Hammond (or clonewheel) player who lacked enthusiasm in anything concerning this instrument(s). It's a world in itself. That SOUND ! That SWIRL ! Anyone who swears that a MACHINE is TOTALLY incapable of LOVE either is tone-deaf when it comes to the Hammond, or is terrified of it. THANK YOU , MR LODDER ! Thanks to the REAL Rotary Club !

I found the drawbar setting info quite useful and accurate so far. Overall I am very happy with the book, the photos, the info, all good. Cd is cool too.
Great Book Mar 14, 2012
By Scott For a Hammond organ player it is a must read. Just wish it was in a spiral notebook. Other than that it is probabbly one of the best books out there.

Underimpressed Dec 10, 2011

I can't say that I care much for this book. It is trying to be two different books, a bio of players and an instructional guide. I don't think it succeeded at either. There is a LOT of written bio material on different players, none of which contributes to a better understanding of the instrument and how to play it. If you're interested in pop and jazz music trivia/history, you might find it interesting, but the author fills a lot of pages with material on what I would call marginal players. Hey, what do I know? Regarding the instructional value, in a word - lame. The examples do not sound distinctive, and many are not at all representative of the players, the Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff examples in particular. The author should have at least nailed these two, possibly the best Hammond players ever. The CD is equally lacking. Many books give you a full band on a separate track. Not this one. I would not recommend this book if you have any knowledge at all regarding the Hammond organ. A slightly better book is Dave Limina's Hammond Organ Complete The examples are more realistic, more numerous, and there are play along tracks with real drums and bass. I would give that one a 3 to 3 1/2. Truth is, there just isn't a really good instructional book out yet for the Hammond organ. My 2 cents.
