It provides easy-to-understand coverage aimed at the novice on topics such as: sound and hearing; microphone models, specs and techniques; mixers; equalization; amplifiers; speakers; the audio chain; schools and universities for continuing education; and much more. Ever since talent show appearances in his pre-teen years, Jerry Slone's been the guy who got stuck hooking up the PA and trying to tweak it to make it sound better. After graduating from the Recording Industry program at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), he road-managed and mixed house audio for a touring band. Today, he works with acts signed to major labels. | | | |

Not much there. Aug 30, 2004
By Gary Worden
"reader, musician, fun guy"
This book is a waste of time. What a disappointment. I've been doing live sound for years, and am interested in tips on how to improve. The advice in this book is so basic and general as to be useless. Talk to others, Slone recommends. Duh. There are a couple tips on mic placement worth thinking about (how to mic a guitar amp to get various tonal qualities). Not much else for anyone with any experience at all.
Could this be targeted for the rank beginner? If so, it fails there as well. One might expect that this book would run through the basics of how to hook up a sound system. What cable plugs in where? But it doesn't. If you're a beginner, you're just as clueless after reading this as if you'd never picked it up. Heck, you might even be more confused.
No desctiptions of what all those gadgets in the rack are and how to use them.
I feel bad about being so negative, and I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings - but this book is quite worthless.

A good simple start. Dec 23, 2008
By Richard E. Johnson
"Just another fan"
Some books are overly technical for the beginning sound engineer. Others are full of questionable information. This book has enough good information to get the novice started and running sound without being overwhelmed by too much information. The concepts are presented clearly and this book is a good foundation for the more technical books.

What a waste of money Apr 09, 2011
By Oswald Angst I was hoping to refine my skills, and learn some of the finer points of pro sound design and setup. Well, I struck out here. I was also hoping that I could use this book as a sort of reference. Nope, strike two,
This book is worthless. For any beginners expecting to get any sort of primer from this book, don't bother. You're much better off learning by the seat of your pants.
Also, this book is only 64 pages, unlike the description.
