Janice Tucker Rhoda's phenomenally successful series, The ABCs of Strings owes much of its success to the wonderful original material for players of all ages and to the sensitive arrangements of familiar classical selections, folk songs and fiddle tunes. The ABCs of Violin for the Absolute Beginner, Book 1 is the first in a series of five excellent violin instruction books that complement the Suzuki books very well. In the ABCs series there are beautiful melodies, short warm-up exercises and study pieces which advance students technically in an easy and enjoyable way. Simple duets, scales, a note-reading worksheet, glossary and practice chart are also included in ABCs of Violin Book 1 along with many graphs to show left-hand finger placement. Complementary materials sold separately are the ABCs of Violin DVD, ABCs of Violin CD, ABCs of Violin Easy Piano Accompaniment and ABCs of Duets.

3Buy the DVD too...  Nov 28, 2008
Do not buy this book unless if you buy the DVD too. If you're an absolute beginner, this book will teach you NOTHING. I bought it without the DVD, but I had a grandma to teach me how to play. We just use this book as an execise and practice song book.

It's got a good collection of simple songs, and a few small tips on music reading, but will get you no where without the DVD.

1what a joke and deceptive  Nov 24, 2008
This is not a book really, it is a list of scores to play, no instruction at all unless you order the DVD which I have ordered now and we will see about that. I am very very disappointed in that I like to read material and cogitate on it. What a joke with the glowing reviews. I give it a zero star, its not a book is a music sheet. I would return this but the cost in shipping and sent would not pass an IQ test to execute on.

5This teacher says: well thought out, well written, gets results  Nov 01, 2008
A while ago, I saw this method on Amazon and thought I'd give it a try with my students. Right off the bat, I saw how much both my youngsters and adults liked the melodies, a good combination of classic tunes and engaging originals. But as much fun as everything here is to play, there's a strong pedagogic basis tying things together. The author really got it right here -- everything builds smartly on what came before. It all makes perfect sense, and it sure is making a difference in my studio. Like this review title says: well thought out, well written, and it gets results.

5new violin player  Sep 15, 2008
I have just started playing the violin, and can not find any person to give me lessons, so I bought this and it is very good. it is a basic here is where the notes are and steps you through learning each note, and gives exercies to practice it...

2"Absolute Beginner" is a Misnomer  Jul 08, 2008
I was very disappointed in this book. The title ("The ABC's of Violin for the Absolute Beginner") really should have been something like "The Beginner's Violin Class Primer" and/or come packaged as a set with the CD/DVD.

I am an absolute beginner at age 37 and was expecting a little more instruction about how to hold the violin and other basics. There was nothing in the Amazon "blub" about needing to purchase the separate DVD or Audio CD. I'm not expecting to become a 1st chair concert violinist at my age....I just wanted to learn a little about the violin and we live in a rural area where violin teachers are about as plentiful as hen's teeth.

This really seems to be a book for students who have access to a violin teacher. The lessons also seem to move very quickly. So far I prefer the "Learn to Play the Violin" by Frank Cappelli that I got from our local library. The Cappelli book at least has photos and descriptions of how to hold the violin and bow (it's not great, but it helps) and has more exercises on learning to play the correct strings...which isn't easy at first! I'll keep the "ABC" book for the songs, which I know I'll enjoy when I become a little more proficent.

Good luck to you all!
