Audio, in all its forms, is a combination of aesthetics and technology. An audio engineer without any sense of aesthetics could successfully run current through a console, but would be unable to judge if the resulting sounds were effective for the application. Similarly, someone with a well-developed aesthetic sense who possesses no technical knowledge would fall short trying to make great audio, since he would have an idea in mind but be unable to execute it. Shaping Sound in the Studio and Beyond takes a unique approach to teaching audio by presenting both the aesthetic and technology elements of recording audio in one text-- it helps you understand the technology while helping you train your standards of what good sound really is. No other book on the market takes this unique and comprehensive view to teach audio production. Topics covered include basic audio theory, microphones, speakers, amps, digital audio, MIDI, audio editing, signal processing, mixing, sound design, and much more. There's also a chapter that defines recording industry jobs available and offers helpful tips about how to get them and keep them. Exercises at the end of each chapter help reinforce the concepts learned. This is an ideal introduction to studio recording and audio production for anyone interested in pursuing these careers, as well as for home recordists and practicing audio engineers and musicians who want to make the most out of their equipment, or improve their communication skills in the studio.

5fabulous book on acoustics  Aug 20, 2007 By Ivan G. Salinas
This is a fabulous book about acoustics and recording theory. What sets this book apart from any others I have read is that it deals with the artistic/aesthetic perspective of sonic perception, which anyone who works in recording studios, professional or amateur, would agree is a crucial element for a successful product.

3A good overview of the tools and life of studio engineers.  Apr 05, 2011 By Joe King
This is the kind of book that you read during your commute, not sitting in front of a mixing console diving into lessons. There is nothing wrong with the information presented in my opinion, but this is an introductory course which makes a decent attempt to wrap its arms around the breadth of studio technology without going too deep in any one area. There are a few good specific examples of how to apply a technology, but you aren't going to come away with a virtual toolbox of tricks or any sense of accomplishment/expertise. It has a chapter about the hierarchical structure of employees and responsibilities at a studio, which was not expected. I would have given it more stars if it had been more apparently labeled as an introduction.

4Great but a little to techy for most.  Aug 25, 2010 By SMG
This book basically covers everything you need for live sound. Remember you're only going to get good at sound by going out and actually doing it, reading this book with help you with the technical aspect of it only. Most sound engineers have been doing their jobs for years, their ears are trained and that is something you can't get out of a book or from a DVD. This book is also quite technical in many places and is a better fit for an acoustical engineer designing building and such. Skim through and read the sections you need most. EQ, Compressors, limiters, and gates confuse most just starting out and that's where I would begin. Experience on live gigs and in band situations is what will better your skills, not a book. At least this will get you started on the right path. it's loaded with good info!

5Great introductory tex  Mar 23, 2012 By GoogleMan
I found this book to be an excellent beginners text. Certainly a little lightweight for the pro, but perfect for someone doing home recording or a beginner student in college or even high school. The writing is simple, not too techy at all, and easy for people to understand. I highly recommend it as a way to learn the basics of audio in a friendly style.

1Not recommend if you are looking a pro audio reference  Aug 15, 2010 By Unique "Unique"
This book fails to provide a structured training on live recording and fails into the pitfall of 'book filling' with generic text and audio equipment pictures. Another of the many audio books written with amateur type content rather than by the experienced pro.

The book fails to provide with the fundamentals of studio recording (studio rooms, microphones, console, recorders, monitors, analog and digital audio editing, tracking and mixing techniques and basic maintenance).

Large collection of off-topic and mismatch through the entire book which makes "hair rise" to any pro : for examples 1) Top end 1/2 million dollar professional studio console followed the illustration of audio signal routing from a musician live mixer or 2) obsolete consumer stereo tape machine format versus obsolete first generation 24-track digital recorder.

No real practical experience being offered to a beginner recording or mixing engineer.
