Not Just The Standards. Feb 10, 2009
By Joel Hooks The harmonica is a very simple instrument and is easy to learn songs by ear. With that said, there are many forgotten Foster gems that are included in this book. Along with the standard plantation melodies, one finds some of the sentimental ballads that Foster is not known for these days, but should be. Foster is thought of in modern times as a "folk song" writer. Make no mistake, old Stephen's songs were art music all the way. That shows in the arrangements in this book.
My only complaint is that many of the arrangements are for 2nd position ("cross harp") and chromatic only. I understand that "blues" players make up the majority of harmonica players, but this is not "blues." I would have liked to see a little space devoted to historical harmonica playing styles. Perhaps using harmonica techniques from the 19th century.
In all, a great book. A nice collection of songs by the most important contributor to American popular music.

By Radman The music book contains a good selection of Foster. From the familiar to the little known. I found the CD not quite as satisfactory - the tempo and type of playing did not alway match the content of the lyrics. "Hard Times, Come Again No More" for example, calls for a slower, contemplative mood. Overall, a good choice.
