Realistic sound abatement for musicians Oct 21, 2008
By T. Marshall This is a practical book. It combines common sense and a depth of experience on the author's part with an introduction to sound treatment materials and construction/renovation methods. It's geared toward working or weekend musicians, those living in residential areas and willing to put more than a little labor and money into practice/recording space. That pretty much rules out apartment dwellers, however. (See if you can get some basement space and put an extra layer of drywall over the entire ceiling.)

A 'must' for any musician who would keep neighbors happy and create a viable practice space. Jan 07, 2007
By Midwest Book Review KEEP THE PEACE! THE MUSICIAN'S GUIDE TO SOUNDPROOFING evolved from a series of articles author Mark Parsons originally wrote for Modern Drummer, and stems from a long-time interest in building rooms for the rehearsal and recording of music. Musicians will find delightful the survey of retrofitting walls and spaces to soundproof and lend to recording and practice acoustics, which comes packed with black and white photos and diagrams throughout. A 'must' for any musician who would keep neighbors happy and create a viable practice space.

Not quite what I was looking for. Jul 03, 2006
By E. Gordis The book is fine for what it is aimed at: people who want to have a recording facility in a residential building.
However, if you do a lot of music and want detailed information about the minimum soundproofing specs in an apartment building about to be built (so you don't end up at war with neighbors)this isn't the book. "Noise control manual for Residential Buildings" by David A. Harris is heavy going, but certainly presents the complexity of the issues in a professional manner.
