4A very good resource for five string bass   Feb 11, 2008
I bought this book because I was looking for something similar to the "Bass Grimoire" that covered five string bass. While this book is not exactly the same as the aforementioned Grimoire, it is still very useful. I really like the neck diagrams for the scales, in particular the "vertical" patterns. The vertical patterns give you nice 4 note per string patterns that you can run up and down the neck, as opposed to the more traditional "horizontal" approach to practicing scales (which is also included in the book's examples, by the way). This is one area where this book actually has the edge on the Bass Grimoire. Another area is the scale notation. The scales are shown in standard notation, neck diagrams, as well as tab. Having these three different types of notation shown for each scale example really helped me wrap my brain around these long patterns.

As far as flaws go, there aren't many. The book only has the scale examples in the keys of B and C, and it is not nearly as complete a thesaurus of scales as the Grimoire is. For example, it has nothing more exotic than the Harmonic Minor scale, which isn't particularly exotic at all. What I would really love to see is a hybrid of the two books, something where the scales are shown in all three notation manners (tab, standard, fretboard diagram), as many known scales as possible are included, all scale examples are shown in all keys, and of course, it is transcribed for five string bass. This would be a thick and expensive book, but it would be one I would definitely buy. Maybe Mr. Emmel should contact the elusive Adam Kadmon about a collaboration (and please let Mr. Kadmon be in charge of cover design)!

In all, I recommend this book if you are looking for a good tool for practicing scales on five string bass. Hopefully more scale books for five string bass will be released in the future, because this is a useful resource and we need more like it.
