Items on her new to-do list include: 1) Quit going-somewhere copywriting job and get going-to-band-practice job. 2) Break up with Hootie and the Blowfish-lovin' boyfriend. 3) Hang out in skanky bars. Meet musicians. 4) Cash in pension and buy kickass guitar amp. 5) Team up with sex-crazed guitar genius/best friend Lucy Stover Hanover II. After auditioning every musician in the greater Los Angeles area---including the deluded, deranged, and underaged---Jenny finds the perfect lineup, and 60-Foot Queenie is born. But while reveling in free tequila shots, autograph hunters, and other perks of minor stardom, Jenny realizes with a shock that 60-Foot Queenie is poised to become even bigger than she imagined. Suddenly, she's learning the real lessons of Rock and Roll High School, including the danger of trusting a record company executive who ties a ponytail in his goatee, and the ten telltale signs your bass player is living in your practice space. Part diary, part crash course in rock stardom, Don't Sleep with Your Drummer is a hilarious, no-holds-barred guide through the pleasures and pitfalls of the music industry---from the beginning to the bitter end, and back again. | | | |

A fun read for all! Jan 13, 2008 Initially, I thought this book would be a little "young" for me--after all, I'm a professional in my late 30s who has never had dreams of becoming a rock star. Happily, I was wrong, as the story of Jenny Troanni, late 20-something rock-star wannabe, is relatable to just about everyone. At the age of 28, Jenny decides that it's time to quit the well-paid, secure job that she hates and finally pursue her dreams of being in a band. She does everything that you would expect--gets rid of her conservative hairstyle, cashes in her IRA to buy a guitar amp, takes out an ad soliciting band members, etc. However, Jenny isn't just playing around here; she is seriously dedicated to her dream and willing to work hard to realize her goal. Unfortunately, Jenny's single-mindedness causes her some trouble down the road. The characters, while slightly stereotypical at times, still come across as very real, and the plot--which unfolds in the form of Jenny's journal--is fast-paced, engaging, and laugh-out-loud funny. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has ever had thoughts of taking a risk to pursue their dreams, even if those dreams are not of the rock variety.
THE DOWN SIDE OF THE MUSIC BIZ! Oct 07, 2006 Not a romance in the true sense of the word but a look "inside" the recording business. Vulgar language abounds but it suits the story. Written like a journal with "notes to self" this book follows Jenny Troiani from quitting her job in hopes of becoming a rock star. Her frustrations with finding others who share in her dream, "using" people she can't stand to get where she needs to be, and how those around her use her and abuse her.

A wonderful read Apr 27, 2004 I have often dreamt of being a rock star. I have even been in a few bands so clearly this book rings true for me. However, the characters are great. The style is loose and easy to get into. I read the book in one day. It made me laugh out loud and remember with slight sadness the heartaches I have felt. This is more than worth your time if you have ever had a dream and your parents thought you were crazy or you thought you were in control but really weren't.

dreaming of rock stars Apr 14, 2004 This book is a must for those girls who's parents f*@#ed them up and who dream of rock stars. Even wannabe groupies will enjoy this book. It reminded me of my circle of friends and Jenny bore the strickingly same personality as my friend Mary Ann. The part about the Mary figure in her mother's front yard had me rolling on the floor laughing because not only was it funny but Mary Ann actually expierenced it. This book is hilarious and I found myself passing it around to my circle of friends. Despite being a book about becoming a Rock Star, this book is very relatable. Most of the time you'll find yourself comparing aspects of Jenny's life and memories to your own.

Amazing book Apr 02, 2003 I picked this book up because of its strange out-of-focus cover. (I have never heard the expression "Don't judge a book by its cover") It waited in my apartment for a couple of weeks and one day I decided to pick it up. A day later I was done with the book. It's a great read and it was great to live vicariously through Jenny. It is an honest read. I would recommend the book to anyone who ever dreamed of being a rock star.
