A proven system that will help you develop a strong musical ear, finger strength, and an understanding of music theory for bass guitar. Just pop in the CDs and follow the lessons from your very first note to every note -on every fret -on every string of your guitar. 2 CDs Total running time: approx. 1 hour 40 minutes. ***COURSE LAYOUT ***AUDIOBOOK CD 1: Descriptive narration, beginner friendly, yet progressive. Starting with a short specified range of notes on the first string. A note is played and held while you match it on your bass guitar, (If you don't find it the first time, don't worry, eventually the narrator tells you what note is being played). The range of notes is progressively made larger, adding string after string, note combinations, and exercises. By the end of disc one the student has learned every note, and every note combination on every string of the bass guitar, plus some very essential music theory, and exercises for improving ones playing abilities. ***AUDIOBOOK CD 2: Less narration than disc 1, and more music. Disc 2 can be used two different ways. 1. You can play along with CD 2 to improve finding the notes you hear as well as building your musical ear. 2. You can listen to CD 2 anytime, anywhere to help train your musical ear. For example: If you want to memorize the sound quality of a minor third interval, you can put track 4 on loop and listen to the exercises that are played on all strings up and down the fretboard. Do the same for any interval! In the end you will have learned to play every possible note combination on your bass guitar, as well as identify them when you here them played in songs. ***FREE AUDIOBOOK TECHNICAL SUPPORT: With the purchase of "Complete Bass Guitar By Ear" you also gain the author, Mark John Sternal, as a teacher. 3Good for recognizing notes by ear...  Jan 23, 2007
I've been playing Bass for a year now, and I bought this two CD set (no book) hoping to really take my playing to the next level.

There are about 60 lessons in all, divided into Note Recognition, Finger Training, and Intervals.

The title is a bit deceptive, as the entire CD is based on a 4-string Bass, and has nothing to do with the 5th or 6th strings!

First, the good: The two CDs are good for helping you recognize different Bass notes and locating them anywhere on your Bass. You start with one string, find a note, then find another, until you can locate all the notes on that one string. Then you move onto the next string, until eventually you can find any note on any string. I find I can pick out notes more easily from songs and play along easier.(Unfortunately, this CD does not help at all with matching notes to what the guitarist is playing.)

The So-So: The Finger training exercises are really basic first-finger first-fret, second-finger second-fret exercise I didn't find useful at all, but maybe for a very beginner. The Interval training seems overly technical, and not really that useful for the playing Bassist. The author could spend more time explaining what these intervals are for! It does show you how to locate the same note on different strings I suppose. (The E on the open first string is also on the second fret at the third string, etc) but this will become quickly obvious to most Bass players who learn the notes on their Bass.

The Bad: The sound quality is good, but sometimes the sound drops out for a second or two, and some of the tracks sound like they were re-recorded over. Not a totally professional production.
