1total junk  Jun 04, 2008
This book is the lousiest chord anthology I've ever seen. It's really awful.

I came across it on Amazon because I was searching for a mandocello chord book. Well, this book looked promising but I was unsure, so I went to my local sheet music store and leafed through a copy.

What junk! First of all, it's simply about 8 pages of chords for the mandolin, and not even the complete gallery of chords. Second, there are no chords for the mandocello, banjo, bazouki, or anything else.

So how, you ask, can the publisher get away with advertising that such chords are to be found within?

Well, since there are only mandolin chords, and since those other instruments all have four strings and are also tuned in fifths, the authors sheepishly inform you, in a short paragraph at the beginning of the text, that, hey, if one were to transpose the book's mandolin chords (GDAE) up or down by a fifth, one would in theory have chords that could be played on those other instruments!

Duh. Is there anybody out there playing instruments as obscure as the mandocello and Irish bazouki who isn't aware of this?

In short, what a ripoff. YOU YOURSELF have to transpose the chords for use on your instrument. And only a fraction of possible chords are even included.

This book is such a misleading ripoff, that as a conscientious mandocelloist, I'm mulling over whether to email Amazon to ask them to stop selling it, as the title is, I submit, deliberately misleading.

I did, though, later find exactly what I wanted. The productions of a group called "frettedfriends," which Amazon does offer from time to time, are the first and last word in chord bibles for many of these rarer stringed instruments. They have quite an array by this point.

For example, their mandocello chord bible can be found at: The Mandocello Chord Bible (Fretted Friends)

Now THAT'S a quality product.
