This short and to-the-point treatise is an excellent choice for introducing copyright issues to rising and established music professionals. By The Book is intentionally small and concise and offers a simple method to guide readers through this tricky area of the law without giving them a false sense of having all the answers. By using real-life examples that music students and professionals can relate to, Monath has provided a straightforward but readable introduction to a complex subject. Marcia Farabee, Librarian of the National Symphony Orchestra and Past President of the Major Orchestra Librarians Association (MOLA) says of By The Book: "This book is informative, concise and comprehensible! I wish I had had access to something like this many years ago when I was in training as a musician and educator. " An important caveat: The approach outlined in By The Book is premised on the reader's willingness to develop and employ independent judgment. While the book does in fact answer many common questions, those merely seeking a litany of do's and don'ts will probably be disappointed.

3There are many better books out there  Aug 25, 2007 By MatthewT
I came to this book hoping to get simple advice, clearly presented. although this book does address issues of copyright, I simply did not enjoy reading this book. The writing style was bland, and there wasn't as much information and straight ahead advice (granted, copyright is very complicated, still the author makes a claim in his title which I feel he is not met).

I think most musicians or teachers work with music or other copywritten material would do better to read Jay Althouse's book.

5From Jay Althouse  Sep 19, 2008 By Jay Althouse
I thank the previous reviewer for his comments about my book on copyright for music educators. However, my book is no longer in print. I am no longer involved in copyright and things change. Therefore, I have not updated it and allowed it to go out of print. I have read Rob's book and recommend it as a fine resource for musicians and music educators.
