5A solid book  May 01, 2010 By S. R. Larson
Overall, this book is solid. It gives a good overview of basic techniques and gives some good tunes to play along with. I've learned basic mandolin from other books, but this one gave me a better understanding of rhythm and bluegrass-related (hammer-on/off, slide, chops, etc.) techniques in a better presented manner. As a downside, I wish that it had more tunes to learn and listen to or that there was an 'intermediate' book that follows this up, but this book is certainly worth the price. Also, everything is in both tablature and standard notation, so it's easy to learn off of both.

5Great book  Feb 06, 2010 By C. Turmel
The book arrived quickly and was very useful. I won't need another book to help me learn how to play mandolin because this one is great.

5Bluegrass Mandolin Basics-Ultimate Beginner Series Book & CD.  Jun 20, 2009 By N. Wroughton
The book/cd nicely 'fleshes out'/can act as a'prequel'to Dennis Caplinger's DVD 'Bluegrass Mandolin-Basics & Beyond'#more readily available in the UK-and yes,it should play on modern dvd players in Britain#.To avoid confusion order the book/cd from Amazon USA#you've been warned#.Two of my bugbears;-1)Tuition material that moves too fast, and 2) Knowing when to swap 'choonking' closed rhythm chords up the neck for a solo without breaking stride, and vice versa!.Neither this package or the dvd adequately explains this, but Dennis does seem to remember learning, and doesn't appear to have any 'own material'axe to grind thus omitting'grass'jam-session staples(so there are plenty here). You'll find music, tab, chord shapes,90 musical examples & songs, and pictures of other longer-scale instruments perhaps more suited to learners' pockets than the Gibson. Also help in how to reach higher neck positions to solo in the fingerboard's dustier regions. On balance then, highly recommended.
