Good for analogue basics, but... Apr 05, 1999
By Dr. Gege GATT This book is geared towards the absolute beginner. It illustrates well the basics of analogue audio both for video and live production. However, although being a good 'hands on' book for the beginner, it does not treat any of the more important technical concepts in professional broadcast. Apart from the above, the book fails to deal with digital audio in video-production and so misses on an important milestone in the modern audio field.
Overly Simplistic and Out of Date Aug 06, 2008
By Stephen Stough Extremely simplistic and brief (139 pp), it dwells on the obvious such as 'what is sound,' or 'what is a microphone'. This book was originally written when sound capture and playback were analog tape-based, with minor edits to give passing mention to digital recording. There are 8 pages of simplistic block diagrams (a full page each) on how to plug sound sources and outputs into an analog mixer, but not a word on post-production software. I am new to sync sound production, but even so I learned exactly nothing from this book that I could not have guessed at from first principles.
