Ready to jam Sep 12, 2007
By J. E. Stokke Here's my first impression of this book/CD:
You get a TAB book with arrangements for 21 "essential" tunes. The songs are in different keys, and for many of them you have to use a capo. There are even three waltzes. The TABs are first basic versions, then solo/up the neck versions. The up the neck versions are often in melodic style. The TABs seems very good, and a little different from what you find in Janet Davis "You Can Teach Yourself Banjo".
Then to the CD. There is one track for each song. Each track has bass, guitar and mandolin all the way through. First, the song is played with banjo in a basic version, then up the neck, then backup banjo (mostly pinch) and then without any banjo - you jam along yourself. Tempo is moderate to slow.
Tony Trischka's banjo playing is really beautiful. It is very clean and right on time all the way. You will enjoy just listening to the CD. His banjo sounds great!
Sound quality is great, but you might like or dislike that the backup band is in the left channel and the banjo alone to the right. The benefit of this, is that you can listen to the left channel only to get the backing band playing without Tony Trischka.
The really great new thing about this book/CD, is that there are versions for banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar and bass. This must be the best way to start a bluegrass band. Let each band member rehearse with their own book. When you meet, you are all ready to jam!

A must have Jun 22, 2009
By T. Laaser This really is a must have book for anyone who's been playing the banjo for a while and starting to want to play with other musicians. The greatest thing about it is it's companion books for other instruments in a standard bluegrass band, so if you and a few friends are trying to form a band this book gives each of you a start. The best two features of this book are that not only are you given the lead melody but also an up the neck variation and the cd is ideal for getting you used to playing with others since it plays the lead once then variation then the band just backs you up! It's really a great deal for what your getting and is very useful wheather your starting a band or wanting to join jams.
All Star Bluegrass Jam-Along for Banjo Feb 15, 2011
By Banjo Girl This is a very nicely written banjo book, it helps you to learn how to play the songs and play along with other instruments. I only wish for a couple of things more, that they would have placed which of the fingers you would use on the songs for both left and right hand, they kind of leave it up to you to figure out. I also wish the songs were slowed down (at first) on the CD for the beginner, and maybe some lyrics for the songs that have them, just to help you keep track of where you are at. But all in all, a very nice book, beginners should not be intimidated by it, it is very clearly written and the music on the CD is great.

"mac"
Tony Trischka is known as one of these banjoists, who brought the picking of the "good-old-five-string" to a new horizon. As teacher he also set footsteps ahead with his elementary instruction books and the "bible" called masters of the five string banjo. Here he gives a very helpful clou how to join in a bluegrass jam and how to develope a break when it's time to do it. For students it might be the crucial step to cross over from a closet picker into a band setup. This book is the missing link. Highly recommended and again: very well done, Tony
